Students share lessons from Father Catich

During an open house for St. Ambrose University senior Grace Tony’s “Catich’s Christ: Community through Clothing” capstone project, two of the late Father Edward Catich’s students demonstrated techniques they learned from their mentor.

Artists Amy Nielsen and Maureen Long were students of the renowned calligrapher in the 1970s at then-St. Ambrose College. At the open house, Nielsen showed guests how to cut letters into slate. Long demonstrated calligraphy using ink and newsprint. Read more...

ABOUT AMY

Amy sit.jpg

I am a lifelong Artist from Davenport, Iowa, with a BA in Fine Art from St. Ambrose University. I have made a living creating fine and commercial art along with teaching art at all levels. I love the Art of Calligraphy and studied with Fr. Edward M. Catich.

My artwork includes almost all types of art: calligraphy, lettering, logo design, letterhead, business card design, brochure design and production, illustration, watercolor, interior design, art instruction, sculpture and varied commercial art marketing services. Mixed media calligraphic pieces are my favorite including 23K gold gilding with watercolor and pen and ink. Slate inscription is a current passion of mine.

Companies I have worked for include: Hallmark Cards, Crown Advertising, Quad City Times, Lockwood Manufacturing & ePower Synergies. I have taught calligraphy for St. Ambrose University along with their SAU ACCEL Classes, and con-tinue to be invited to teach at The FIGGE Art Museum, Blackhawk Community College, Clinton River Arts Center, Bettendorf, IA and Moline, IL Public Libraries, Art Legacy League and other venues in the Quad City area.

I am a founding Board of Directors member for The Art Legacy League and CORE FACULTY, The Catfish Letter Arts School.

Inspired by nature and by the words used to express our feelings and frustrations, I reinterpret quotations into visual expressions using love for nature and for words to express yet another world. Many who own my calligraphic work enjoy it because they appreciate the artistic design and the message meaning something special to them in their lives.
